The special thing about local heritage is above all its diversity: it consists of our social networks, culture and nature. The focus is always on people's commitment, the local heritage associations bring them together and are able to reflect the diversity of local heritage by combining social and technical issues. An interdisciplinary approach to homeland therefore makes sense.
Activities
The BHU has many activities and works on a wide range of topics relating to home and identity. In addition to the long-standing campaigns, events and publications convey commitment to the homeland. The BHU has set up three special institutions, which we have been supporting ever since. Read more about them on this page.
Campaigns
The BHU runs multi-year campaigns, such as the Cultural Monument of the Year every year since 2004, the Tree of the Year since 1997 and, since 2018, it has launched the European Landscape Decade (DALE) together with European partners. The decade was launched with a joint event in Aschaffenburg at the beginning of 2018 and follows on from the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.
Facilities
The BHU creates three permanent facilities for the association's work. The original intention was to establish the BHU's promotion of young talent as a permanent institution. The promotion of young talent will be integrated into the ongoing work of the Federal Office and the education and training elements will be incorporated into the European Home Academy.
Library of local heritage journals
The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig is responsible for the nationwide library of German local history journals. More than 3000 local history journals are currently regularly delivered to the library of German local history journals.
